Kuiken Brothers recently announced the addition of 65 new historically accurate moulding profiles to their in-stock KB Moulding Collection.
Contained within the pages of this unique KB Classical Moulding online catalog you will find several series of Classical and Historical moulding. We have been very meticulous in our research and have taken great care in depicting them as historically and architecturally accurate as possible.
These are the mouldings which would have been utilized and found in many period homes of the 18th and 19th centuries. If the terms Early American, Georgian, Greek Revival, Federal or Colonial Revival pique your interest then you will surely find these molding profiles intriguing. Many of these profiles have historic precedent in our area, the Middle Atlantic and New England regions.

Kuiken Brothers hosts Historic Bergen County Architecture Tour
Presented by Bergenfield resident Tim Adriance
Thursday June 10, 2010, Midland Park, NJ – Twenty-five Bergen County architects gathered at Kuiken Brothers’ Midland Park lumberyard and millwork showroom to depart on a one day, one hundred site tour of significant and historic architecture found in and around Bergen County.
The tour was presented by local historian and author Tim Adriance of Bergenfield, and focused on the various styles and building types found in our immediate area. “We are beginning to see a return to smaller more classical and historical architectural traditions,” said Adriance. “This move is not only driven by economic demands such as energy conservation, but is also driven by a new societal change toward the close comfort that traditional architecture affords”. One need not look any farther than our immediate area for wonderful examples of classic, historic homes which can be used as the basis for future designs.
Doug Kuiken, president of Kuiken Brothers, agreed. “This tour gave us an opportunity to take a moment to reflect on the rich architectural history of Bergen County. As a local lumberyard and building materials supplier, we have the unique opportunity to provide modern day millwork options through partners like Marvin Windows and Doors to achieve the look and feel of these historic and architecturally significant homes.”
Particular attention was placed on the more classical and unique styles found in and around Bergen County, including the Jersey Dutch, Colonial Revival, Federal, Greek Revival and Victorian. Attendees were able to walk around the New Bridge Landing site (Teaneck), Cady Stanton House (Tenafly), the Fell House (Allendale). The tour also included a quick hop across the border into Rockland County to the ’76 House in Tappan, NY, where lunch was served in one of America’s oldest taverns.
“Architects need not look any farther than our immediate area for wonderful examples of classic historic homes,” concluded Adriance. “These can be used as the basis for the future designs which not only meet the demand of a new economic reality, but will resonate strongly with a client base that is looking for a sense of place which they call home.”
I happened to wake up early this morning and flipped through to PBS where I came across this video, Alone in the Wilderness, the story of Dick Proenneke. Dick Proenneke retired at age 50 in 1967 and decided to build his own cabin on the shore of Twin Lakes. The first summer he scouted for the best cabin site, and cut and peeled the logs he would use for lumber for his cabin. Dick Proenneke returned the next summer to finish the cabin where he lived for over 30 years.
This is just a quick video, but shows some spectacular craftsmanship for a man, working alone, in 1967, in the middle of Alaska. He builds his log cabin, from timber he fell on his own, a moss roof, doors, hinges, and a stone chimney all while gathering all of his food from the land.
If you haven’t had a chance to catch the video on PBS, you can purchase a number of the different videos produced by Bob Swerer Productions here www.dickproenneke.com.
For those who want style, quality and durability in their windows, Marvin proudly announces that it has expanded its Ultimate Casement and Awning Collection to include the Ultimate Push Out Casement and Awning.
Unlike crank out casements and awnings, the Ultimate Push Out Casement and Awning have handles that open the window in a simple turn. Push out hardware was the original way of opening a casement window and it is known for its classic look.
Marvin's Ultimate Push Out Casement Window offers easy installation with removable interior covers and pre-drilled jamb holes.
Along with looks comes superior performance—the Ultimate Push Out Casement and Awning have the top-notch performance of the Ultimate Casement and Awning. Their durable, commercial-grade hardware allows for large sizes and numerous configurations. The hardware is also an integral part of the revolutionary wash mode, which allows a person to wash the exterior glass of the casement from the inside.
In order to have a screen that works with the wash mode, the Ultimate Push Out Casement and Awning employ a swinging screen. This elegant screen is easy to operate: simply pull on the knob and the screen swings inward. The swinging screen comes with a standard wood surround to seamlessly blend in with the interior of the window.
The Ultimate Push Out Casement provides wide open views, meeting egress even at smaller sizes, since it opens close to the jamb. Homeowners can choose Marvin’s exclusive sash limiter to control how much the window opens, without sacrificing egress. Easily opened to various degrees, the sash limiter gives homeowners the choice of letting in as much fresh air as they choose. A multi-point locking system ensures that the window tightly seals with the ease of using one handle to lock at multiple points along the stile.
Like all Marvin products, the Ultimate Push Out Casement and Awning has Low E II insulating glass with argon gas between the panes as a standard. Tri-pane insulating glass will now be offered as an option for even more energy efficient windows.
Options and choices for the Ultimate Push Out Casement and Awning abound. An optional simulated check rail and taller bottom rail allow the window to look like a double hung, but perform like a casement—a valuable option for homeowners who want to match their home’s current architectural style, but who prefer a casement’s operation and performance.
The Ultimate Push Out Casement and Awning also comes in all wood or wood-clad. Marvin’s popular wood-clad windows have a strong, durable extruded aluminum exterior and a wood interior. A 70 percent Kynar® 500 finish on the cladding helps colors remain rich and bright, while a choice of 19 clad colors and nine casings means that the desired look can be achieved. The wood window option, with wood on the interior and exterior, offers a look of historical accuracy and choice, since the wood can be painted different colors.
When a replacement window is needed, the Push Out Replacement Casement and Awning delivers with a window that can replace almost anything, thanks to its narrow jamb and the ability to mimic the look of a double hung.
Installation of both the Ultimate Push Out Casement and the Ultimate Push Out Replacement Casement is simple, thanks to removable interior covers and pre-drilled jamb holes which provide a clean appearance. Marvin’s custom capabilities mean that every size is a standard size, so both replacement and new Ultimate Push Out Casement windows will always fit perfectly.
Thomas Goetz, Product Planner, says, “The Ultimate Casement with crank out hardware has been so popular that we are thrilled to offer the Ultimate Push Out Casement. Marvin is all about offering our customers choices, and the Ultimate Push Out Casement is a great new option for people who prefer traditional styling with modern features like the wash mode and multi-point hardware.”

News from Kuiken Brothers – Marvin Ultimate Casement
The most innovative window of the year is now available with the classic beauty of wood inside and outside: Marvin Windows and Doors has introduced the Wood Ultimate Casement window. This new addition to the Ultimate Casement and Awning Collection will continue to add to Marvin’s value and offer important features for builders, remodelers, architects and homeowners.
Not only are these new windows beautiful, with many design options and large sizing, but they also are easy to install and are built with the quality Marvin is known for.
In addition to the Wood Ultimate Casement, Marvin Windows and Doors is also offering the Wood Ultimate Awning and a Wood Ultimate Picture Window. Each window has matching profiles to seamlessly blend together in various configurations. With these countless design options, plus the choice of five sizes of simulated divided lites, it is easy to achieve the exact look needed.
When the look of a double hung is preferred, but casement windows are needed for egress purposes, or because homeowners prefer the operation of a casement, the Wood Ultimate Casement delivers with design flexibility. A simulated check rail and a tall bottom rail mimic the look of a double hung, allowing a home to keep its architectural style and have the top-notch performance of the Wood Ultimate Casement. And now Marvin gives homeowners, builders and architects the ability to have extremely large sizes—among the largest in the industry. The Wood Ultimate Casement’s largest size is 40” wide x 92” tall or 36” wide x 96” tall and the awning window can reach a maximum size of 72” x 72”.
With these large sizes comes the need for ultimate performance and Marvin delivers. The Wood Ultimate Casement has a commercial rating (CW), design pressure rating of 50 and can hold a 150-lb. sash. The commercial-grade hardware, the most durable on the market today, allows the window to operate smoothly. Unlike other casement windows, which can take up to eighteen cranks to open, the Wood Ultimate Casement opens in only nine cranks. A folding handle unobtrusively blends in with window treatments and the cover and lock handle set are removable for easy painting and staining.
The Wood Ultimate Casement meets egress even at smaller sizes and is perfect for homeowners looking to expand their view. Opening close to the jamb, the Wood Ultimate Casement lets in the maximum amount of fresh air and gives unobstructed views.
The Wood Ultimate Casement also has a feature not found on other windows: the revolutionary wash mode. In three simple steps, homeowners can rotate the exterior glass to the interior to wash it:
Crank handle twice.
Push down on the hardware arm and push the window away. Then crank the handle back.
Swing window all the way open, pulling it across towards the lock for accessibility to exterior glass.
With the innovative wash mode, there is no need for ladders or scaffolding to get windows clean. And since the Wood Ultimate Casement can be washed entirely from the interior, there is no risk of falling from ladders. Windows on second- and third-stories can be easily cleaned to keep views clear.
The Wood Ultimate Casement features a traditional exterior, with beautiful shadow lines to elevate any home’s appearance.
The Wood Ultimate Casement offers easy installation. Removable interior covers and pre-drilled jamb holes provide a clean, finished appearance. Since at Marvin every size is a standard size, the Wood Ultimate Casement and Awning will always be a perfect fit.
Exterior wood on the Wood Ultimate Casement can be painted, making it ideal for those who enjoy changing their home’s exterior décor or who seek historical accuracy.
The Wood Ultimate Casement also helps improve a home’s energy efficiency with low E II insulating glass with argon to keep heat inside in the winter and out in the summer, lowering heating and cooling bills.
Thomas Goetz, Senior Product Planner, says, “We’ve seen how successful our Clad Ultimate Casement has been and we are thrilled to offer the Wood Ultimate Casement for expanded uses of this highly innovative window. A new home or an addition will be greatly enhanced by the Wood Ultimate Casement’s strength and beauty, as well as its convenient wash mode.”

Kuiken Brothers Bergen Colonial Moulding package helps simplify the moulding selection process
Choosing a crown moulding can be simple, but finding matching base and casings can be difficult and sometimes overwhelming. This guide helps to simplify the process by combining a number of profiles found in our stock moulding collection. These combinations have been used by some of finest craftsmen in the New Jersey/ New York area to completely transform the look and feel of a home.
According to the The Architecture of Bergen County, New Jersey “the Colonial Revival mode is especially well represented with domestic buildings from the early 1900s. although contemporaneous churches, schools, and commercial buildings of various Colonial Revival designs are numerous, too. In a few neighborhoods that were developed in the first decades of the twentieth century, Colonial Revival designs were used exclusively; yet a mixture of building styles was more common.”1

Kuiken Brothers currently stocks over 300 moulding profiles, but don’t feel like you are limited to just those profiles. You can create a completely different look by using a few different combinations of mouldings. Try combining an upside down casing with one of our crowns to get the effect of a much larger crown, without the expense. Add a back band to any of our casings to give added depth and dimension. We have created a number of crown molding combinations on our website.
Invert a base moulding and combine it with a crown moulding for a much larger looking crown, without the increased expense
For the crown moulding combination above, we have simply inverted our KB215 Special Base moulding and applied the KB345 Beaded Crown moulding. This is a 2 part combination, which can help reduce labor costs, without sacrificing your ability to make a bold statement.
Here we have combined our KB345 Beaded Crown, a standard Windsor One 5/4 x 4 S4S board, and a nice simple KB358 Rabbeted Beaded Cove. This combination goes really well with our KB140 Special Casing and the KB197 Back Band. Check out the Kuiken Brothers Moulding Design Guide where provide suggestions for crown, casing and base mouldings.
